Unlocking the Power of the Flipper Zero: Exploring the Features and Exploiting Wireless Security

BSidesKC 2023 · with Cosette Mazet

A live tour of the Flipper Zero's capabilities, capped off by hacking a 20-year-old garage door opener's rolling code on stage.

The Flipper Zero landed in the mainstream as “that hacker toy,” but underneath the dolphin is a genuinely capable multi-tool: sub-GHz radio, RFID/NFC, infrared, iButton, GPIO, and a scriptable BadUSB stack. Cosette Mazet and I walked through what each subsystem actually does, where the practical security implications are, and how the device fits into real assessment work rather than TikTok theatrics.

The centerpiece was live: capturing and defeating the rolling-code scheme of a twenty-year-old garage door opener on stage, and using that walk-through to explain why rolling codes exist, how early implementations aged badly, and what modern receivers do differently.

Key takeaways

  • What the Flipper Zero can and cannot do out of the box, separating capability from hype
  • How rolling-code (hopping-code) garage systems work, and the weaknesses of early-2000s implementations
  • Responsible-use framing: testing hardware you own, and what this class of tool means for defenders
